Those guns that were used for stabbing what were they called?
As previously mentioned - a bayonet. It was an eighteen inch long triangular bladed stabbing weapon designed to leave a long, winding puncture wound in a body. (Puncture wounds r more difficult for a surgeon to suture.) The blade hung to one side so as not to interfere with the bullet leaving the barrel, or to interfere with the ramrod when reloading the gun. Bayonets were designed to turn a musket into an eight-pound spear to defend oneself in close fighting. Contrary to popular belief they were not used when u ran out of ammo - that rarely happened.
The army translated a French manual which listed parries, thrusts & so forth (in French, ie, ''in secunde, parry! Guard!'') to block an enemy attack & stab him with ur own. Volunteers were reluctant to use bayonets because it required one to get in close. Why bother when u can shoot them down 100 yards before they can touch you? Another common sense reason - using a bayonet assumes the other fellow is willing to stand there & do the same thing. Again, anyone with sense will know that by the time u r at bayonet contact u have already lost control of the situation. I've learned this drill, & it was used for confidence-building & exercise, & less for self-defense.
The bayonet was still useful - punching holes in tins to get at the condensed milk, candle holders, holding ur meat ration over the fire, fishing coals out of the campfire to light ur smoke, & it makes a great back scratcher.
The M-16A2 assualt rifle has a lug under the barrel to fix a bayonet. The bayonet is a stubby, six-inch knife. I think it has been phased out, given the average firepower packed by a US soldier today.
Rifled muskets. And the sword on the end was a special kind of bayonet called a sword bayonet. No gun was actually used for stabbing, but when fitted with a bayonet of any kind one could thrust or stab with a musket. The bayonet is a thrusting weapon that gets attached to a musket or rifle for just such a purpose. Sword bayonets wer a little wider & longer than the standard bayonet & had a handle that allowed them to be wielded easier than a standard bayonet when not attached to a musket. Bowie knives were also some times used as bayonets, though they needed a slight modification to be attached to the musket barrel.
The Springfield and Thompson repeating rifles were used by Union Troops with an attached bayonet
Various rifles and carbines were used. There was no standard firearm used by everyone. BTW the ''sword'' is called a bayonet.
The ''sword'' part is called a bayonet. Guns were made so that these could be attached. The order would be to ''fix bayonets'' and the soldiers would attach them.
